Lector - Commentators
This group is responsible for the readings at Sunday Masses, Holydays, etc., and the leadership of congregational participation. To become a reader, a person must be trained. After training, he or she will be assigned to the Mass time of their choice, usually once a month, and must make suitable preparation. There are occasional general meetings and individual training sessions, on a one to one basis, which are readily available. You are welcomed to join this ministry. Please call Mary Kay Fanning at 646-3266.
Liturgy of the Word for Children
Liturgy of the Word for children is a scripture/homily worship experience for children ages 4 - 10. During the school year, at the 5:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday and at the 10:00 a.m. Sunday Mass, they exit the main church with a volunteer presider immediately following the opening prayer. The group is divided into two age groups. This worship (not classroom) experience stresses the liturgical season & gospel message in a developmentally appropriate setting, as suggested by the Vatican Document "Directory for Masses with Children." For information call Debra Greaney (828-3620).

Servers
This organization trains and schedules servers to assist the priest at Mass. Each year St. Hugo’s gives the opportunity to young people in the sixth grade and older to become servers at the celebration of the Eucharistic Liturgy. This is a singular honor because it allows you to help the celebrant at the feast which brings the Son of God and our Brother to His people in a very special way. Servers, though, have some very serious responsibilities, too.
The first and most important is that each one must want to serve himself or herself. They must do it because they choose to do it, not because a friend, or brother or sister serves, or because Mom or Dad wants them to do it. Second, they must learn what to do and then do it reverently. Third, they must resolve and work out with their parents that they will keep their appointments on time (10 minutes before Mass begins) or find a substitute according to server rules. Schedules are mailed to each server and are published each week in the Sunday bulletin.
You must decide the first question. If you choose to become a server, please print and fill out a Server Registration Form. Then return it to school or to me at one of the training sessions: October 12, at 12:00 p.m., October 19 at 12:00 p.m. and October 26 at 12:00 p.m. You must attend two sessions. Each session lasts about one hour. The sixth grade will begin serving in October. I look forward to seeing you and working with you to make Liturgy at St. Hugo’s more meaningful for you and us, and to glory our Brother, Jesus Christ. See you Ten Minutes Before Mass! Director, Bill Slowey, (248) 644-7293.
