A portion of the sacrament preparation takes place at home and requires the participation of parents and other family members. A service requirement is part of the sacrament preparation for both grades 2 and 8.

The Sacrament Preparation Meeting Schedule is available through this website and is also available in the Parish Office, or in the RE Office. Attendance at these meetings is a requirement for both parents and children.

Sacrament Preparation for Children Attending Catholic Schools Other Than St. Hugo School

Students who are in grade 2 or grade 8 and attend a Catholic school other than St. Hugo School are still expected to celebrate the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist ( = 2nd grade), and Confirmation ( = 8th grade) at St. Hugo, their home parish. We welcome these students and look forward each year to having them join with the Religious Education students and the

St. Hugo School students in the preparation for, and celebration of, these sacraments. We ask that parents do the following:

  1. Register your child for the sacrament through the Religious Education Office – we coordinate the Sacrament Preparation Program for the entire parish.
  2. Plan on attending the meetings WITH YOUR CHILD that relate to either 2nd or 8th grade – the Sacrament Preparation Meeting Schedule is available on this website and in the RE Office.

  1. Work together with your child at home to complete the sacrament preparation materials we will provide.
  2. Bring your child to 1-2 practices in church prior to First Eucharist or Confirmation.

The Religious Education Office will be happy to help you with any questions you may have and to accept your child’s registration. Please call us at: 248-642-6062.

Along with participation in the Religious Education Program,

Children and their families are expected to participate in the

Weekend liturgies on either Saturday evening or Sunday.

Parents and students in Grades 2 and 8 are required to attend the

Sacrament Preparation Meetings held throughout the year.

“Circle of Grace” Program

Each year the Religious Education Program incorporates one lesson into our regular curriculum from the “Circle of Grace” program, which addresses the area of safe environment education for our children and young people. The program is mandated for use in every Religious Education program by the Archdiocese of Detroit.

The need for such a program was identified by the United States Conference of Bishops in their Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People:

“Diocese will establish ‘safe environment’ programs. They will cooperate with parents, civil authorities, educators, and community organizations to provide education and training for children, youth, parents, ministers, educators, and others about ways to make and maintain a safe environment for children.”

Article 12 – Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People

After considering many options, the Office for Faith Formation/Catechetics of the Archdiocese of Detroit chose the “Circle of Grace” program as the best means of achieving the Bishops’ goal of safe environment education for our children. The program is supported and mandated by Archbishop Allen Vigneron, and is meant to supplement the regular Religious Education curriculum.

In compliance with these guidelines, our Religious Education Program incorporates one lesson of the “Circle of Grace” program into the RE schedule every year. A written Permission Form is required for participation in the “COG” program, and this is included on the RE registration form.

Questions about the “Circle of Grace” program can be directed to:

Mitzi Bucchi, Coordinator of Religious Education (248-642-6062).
