In the Summer and
Fall of 1968, the 330 parishes of the Detroit Archdiocese were arranged in 25
regional groupings called vicariates. The purpose in establishing these
vicariates was to make possible greater cooperation among the parishes of a
given area and to provide a "middle ground" of communication between the
individual parish and the archdiocese.
The structural model
for the vicariates is similar to the model upon which parishes are now based.
The Vicariate Council is composed of all the priests, one religious sister, and
one lay couple from each member parish, as well as representatives of central
schools and other Catholic institutions within the area of the vicariate.
Secondly, there are four vicariate commissions in Administration, Christian
Service, Education and Worship.
A chairman of the
vicariate, a Vicar, is elected from among the priests and by vote of the
Vicariate Council. The Vicar has the responsibility for coordinating different
activities within the vicariate and for attending regular meetings with the
other vicars at the diocesan level.

Together In Faith
With fewer priests, changing demographics, and demands on
financial resources, Together in Faith, a strategic planning
process for the Archdiocese of Detroit, is now underway. Together
in Faith is designed to secure the future of the Archdiocese of
Detroit. Catholic leadership from the parishes and schools are now
participating in regional meetings and have begun receiving the
workbooks and statistical information they will need to assist them
in the planning process. Following a yearlong self-assessment phase,
Cardinal Maida will present a blueprint of the strategic plan in
Advent 2005. Additional information on Together in Faith is
available at
www.AODonline.org.
