Due to COVID, the South Oakland Shelter guests are being housed at a local motel instead of sheltering at congregations in Oakland County.  As part of our longstanding commitment to SOS, instead of providing temporary shelter for a week, St. Hugo’s Parish has been asked to provide lunch and dinner for the shelter’s 88 guests during the week of August 21 through August 28, 2021.

 

There are two ways that you can help with this ministry this year:

 

Option A – Donate to the “Red Bag” collection the weekend of August 14-15 to offset the ongoing costs of sheltering the SOS guests.  Lighthouse pays about $1800 per day – that’s over $12,000 per month – to shelter their guests at the motel.  Since we cannot provide shelter at the parish this year, please donate generously to help defray the cost of shelter for the SOS guests.  If you wish to donate by check, please make the check payable to “St. Hugo of the Hills Church” and write “South Oakland Shelter” on the memo line.  Checks may be placed in the Red Bag collection or sent to the parish office. Donations to the Red Bag collection may also be made online, at www.sthugo.org.

 

Option B - Volunteer to purchase and deliver lunches or dinners to the SOS guests.  You may want to do this as an individual family or as a group (e.g., Ushers Club, Altar Society, Scout Troops, etc.).  An online sign-up is available to volunteer.  Each day there are 4 sign-up slots for lunch and 4 slots for dinner.  Each commitment covers one meal for 22 people to be purchased and delivered (or have the restaurant deliver) as individually packaged meals.  You can also sign up for multiple slots and provide 44, 66 or even all 88 meals.  Volunteers will be contacted by a member of the organizing team who will provide details, including directions to the motel, a list of suggested restaurants and menu ideas. Please note: home cooked meals cannot be provided this year. All meals must be prepared and individually portioned by a commercial kitchen.

The sign-up deadline is August 10, 2021.
