Archdiocesan announcement regarding David Haas
Over the past several months, multiple (arch)dioceses in the United States have received allegations concerning inappropriate sexual behavior against liturgical composer David Haas, spanning the years 1979-2020. While these allegations have not been proven, out of an abundance of caution and a desire not to cause distress for those who have suffered from sexual misconduct, all parishes in the Archdiocese of Detroit are directed to refrain from using music composed by Mr. Haas at this time*. A list of works composed by Mr. Haas can be found here. This is not an exhaustive list, so pastors and music directors should continue to consult the attribution(s) in their hymnals when selecting music. In addition, until these matters are resolved, Mr. Haas may not give presentations at workshops, concerts, or similar events hosted by the Archdiocese of Detroit, parishes, Catholic schools or other Catholic institutions in the diocese. The Archdiocese of Detroit takes these steps alongside several other (arch)dioceses around the country. According to records, Mr. Haas attended St. John’s Provincial Seminary in Plymouth from 1968 until 1971, sponsored by the Diocese of Grand Rapids. As of this writing, we are not aware of any incidents or allegations involving Mr. Haas in the Archdiocese of Detroit. Individuals with knowledge of sexual abuse by clergy or other Church representatives are urged to contact local law enforcement and/or the Michigan Attorney General’s Office at (844) 324-3374 or aginvestigations@michigan.gov. Individuals also may contact the Archdiocese of Detroit by visiting protect.aod.org or by calling the 24/7 victim assistance line at (866) 343-8055 or by emailing vac@aod.org. There are no time limits or restrictions on individuals wishing to report abuse. *At the discretion of the pastor, music composed by Mr. Haas may be used during a funeral or wedding Mass only when such music is explicitly requested by the family. Selections include: You Are Mine, Wherever You Go, We Are Called
