Mass of Anointing Registration

Mass for the Sick with the Sacrament of Anointing

On Saturday, October 25th at 11AM our parish will celebrate a special Mass for the Sick, during which the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be offered to those who qualify to receive it. This is a beautiful sacrament of healing, comfort, and strengthening in the face of illness or the frailty of age. It is not only for those who are near death, but also not for just anyone who happens to be at Mass.

What the Church Teaches

  • The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is rooted in Scripture: Is any among you sick? Let him call for the presbyters of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord (James 5:14).
  • The Catechism explains: The special grace of this sacrament has as its effects: the uniting of the sick person to the passion of Christ… the strengthening, peace, and courage to endure… the forgiveness of sins… and sometimes, if God wills, the restoration of health (CCC 1520–1523).
  • Canon Law states: The anointing of the sick can be administered to a member of the faithful who, having reached the use of reason, begins to be in danger due to sickness or old age (Canon 1004).

Who Should Be Anointed

  • Those who are seriously ill in body or mind.
  • Those preparing for serious surgery because of a health condition.
  • The elderly, if their health is significantly weakened, even without a specific illness.
  • Those experiencing the frailty of advanced age.
  • Children who have reached the age of reason (around 7) and who are seriously ill.
  • Those whose chronic illness has worsened or taken a serious turn.

Who Should Not Be Anointed

  • Those who are in good health, even if they live with minor aches, pains, or ordinary struggles of life.
  • Those receiving the sacrament only for “preventive” reasons (e.g., just in case).
  • Infants and young children below the age of reason.
  • Those whose condition is primarily non-medical (e.g., stress, exams, general anxiety), unless linked to a diagnosed serious mental illness.
  • Anyone who has already been anointed recently and whose condition has not changed.

Registration Required

Please fill out the electronic form found HERE. Or return the paper copy below to the parish office by Friday, October 17th. Late registrations and walk-ins are not permitted because we must know beforehand how many additional priests are needed.

A Word of Encouragement

The Anointing of the Sick is a precious gift, not a general blessing. When received properly, it unites the sick to Christ’s saving Passion, strengthens them in their trial, and places them in the merciful hands of the Divine Physician.

Let us pray for all who suffer in body, mind, or spirit, and ask the Lord Jesus—who healed the sick and lifted up the lowly—to pour out his healing love upon our community.
